Papers, 1868-ca.1890.

Consists of a day book dated from November 1877 to July 1878 that gives the days on which the kiln was drawn, the wares produced (sets, pitchers, cup and saucers, stop jars, jugs, vases, chamber covers, cuspidores, etc), and a number that probably corresponds to a design number; patterns used for decorating the objects, and hand colored drawings depicting decorated wares. Numbers on the drawings correspond to the numbers in the day book. Many of the objects feature gold trim with decorative bands. A few depict flowered illustrations, including: "Apple blossom" and "tulip." Three of the patterns have small holes and ink residue, suggesting that they were executed. As well, the collection includes three bills listing goods sold to J.O. Glover of Buffalo Cross Roads, Pennsylvania, in 1887. He bought large quantities, suggesting that he was stocking a store or hotel. The bill heads are illustrated with a picture of a pitcher and a covered bowl. The collection also includes a scrapbook which was kept by John Hart Brewer and two small memorandum books. The scrapbook contains letters written to the firm, newspaper articles about the earthenware and ceramics trade, a printed statement about the condition of the pottery industry in the U.S. in 1872, copies of speeches given by politicians, a gas bill, and other items relating not only to Ott and Brewer Company, but also to the pottery trade in general. Most of the items date from the 1870s, but one letter from 1942 is also laid in. One memorandum book is signed by John Hart Brewer and dated 1868. It includes notes about firings and glazes. The other book contains a wide variety of notes.

Ott and Brewer, a pottery firm in Trenton, N.J., was established in 1871 by Joseph Ott and John Hart Brewer. It sprang from an earlier firm, Bloor, Ott and Booth, which built the Etruria Pottery Works in May, 1863. Between 1871 and 1876, the firm primarily made ironstone china and queensware.
